Leveled readers or decodable readers? Sight words or high frequency words or heart words? MSV or Orthographic Mapping? Many educators have been trained in the method of Guided Reading and Balanced Literacy and have seen success for years in their classrooms. However, educators have also had some students who continued to struggle with learning how to read, despite their best efforts. If this sounds familiar, you may have seen the recent buzz about “Science of Reading” and wondered if some of the practices could help your students.
Based on the work of Jan Burkins and Kari Yates (2021) and Marnie Ginsberg (Reading Simplified Academy), Beth Waufle, MEd and Brie Leggat Johnson, PhD will discuss some common misunderstandings that drive current practices in Guided Reading. They will then offer some insights in how K-2 teachers can take action to infuse their small group reading instruction with effective and time-saving strategies based on reading science. Also offered at 11:10 AM.
